Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety & Health Act of 1970. The employer does not furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which are free from the recognized hazard of coming in contact with molten steel during the process of making steel: This violation occurred on or about February 1, 2011, in the melt shop, where employee(s) were exposed to the hazard of coming contact with molten steel during the mixing process. ABATEMENT NOTE: A feasible and useful means of abatement, among other methods, is to 1. Shield surfaces where close contact with molten steel ladles and splashing and spraying from hot molten steel is reasonably expected. 2. Eliminate direct human contact with and being close to molten steel ladles by installing an automatic argon coupling system. 3. Engineer a method to disconnect the argon stir hose while not exposing the employee to molten steel.
