Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CUTS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to serious severe lacerations from improper use of a chainsaw. JOBSITE: An employee, who was engaged in cutting branches and limbs with a chain saw while standing in the tree did not use both hands to safely operate the chain saw at all times. On or about 03/16/2010, the chain saw was displaced during the cutting operation and hit the employee's left wrist. The employee sustained a severe laceration to left wrist from the incident. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: 1. Place thumbs and fingers of both hands encircling the handle of the chain saw for a proper grip. 2. Follow the appropriate standards, such as ANSI Z133.1-2006, 29 CFR 1910.266(e)(2)(viii): the chain saw shall be held with the thumbs and fingers of both hands encircling the handles during operation unless the employer demonstrates that a greater hazard is posed by keeping both hands on the chain saw in that particular situation. 3. Utilize appropriate tools and equipment for the task. 4. Provide training and specific instructions for proper handling of chain saws. 5. Utilize other effective and safe means or methods.
