Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing/struck-by hazards: (a) On or about May 18, 2009, an employee was exposed to crushing hazards while removing a hydraulic cylinder on an International flatbed trailer when the ramp on the trailer fell causing fatal injuries to the employee. Among other methods, acceptable and feasible means of abatement would be for the employer to: 1. Develop and implement written procedures on how and when to properly use cribbing, jack stands, and/or blocks for employees working under any type of vehicle; and 2. Provide specific training on these procedures for employees who work under vehicles or other suspended machinery.
