Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: CHEMICAL
Labor and Employment Article, Section 5-104(a): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: (a)Date of Violation:02/06/09 Location:Mixing Area Condition:Employees were exposed to the hazard of flash fire from the ignition of flammable vapors by static electricity when ACEMATT TS 100 (a chemically prepared, micronized silicon dioxide powder) was added to a mixing tank, containing acrylic resin, aromatic 100 and lactol spirits by dumping the material from 25-pound bags and allowing it to free fall approximately 4 feet to the solvent level. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to add the powder in small quantities using a chute that is bonded and grounded in accordance with NFPA 77 and extends to the level of the solvent. Another method would be to inert the atmosphere within the mixing tank prior to adding the powder.
