Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that, employees were exposed to crush-by or struck-by hazards while cutting a tree: 189 Slater Road, Tolland CT: On or about 2/2/08 an employee was cutting an uprooted tree that was lying across power and communication lines. After the employee made the notch cut in the tree trunk and as he was making the back cut the upper portion of the tree trunk broke free at the cut and fell on him. The back cut went past the depth of the notch cut. One feasible and acceptable abetment method is to make cuts in accordance with American National Standards Institute Standard ANSI Z133.1 - 2006 entitled "Safety Requirements for Arboricultural Operations". In particular, comply with section 8.5.15.4 of the ANSI standard which states that the back cut must not penetrate into the predetermined hinge area.
