Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees exposed to struck-by hazards while using a permanent magnet for hoisting and positioning heavy circular steel parts for which it was not designed. Rockford, IL. Jobsite: Employee was operating an overhead crane in conjunction with a permanent magnet to hoist and for positioning a 1200 lb. ring gear into a crawler crane frame. The employee, while positioning the ring gear, was exposed to struck-by hazard when the permanent magnet failed. The permanent magnet was overloaded and the diameter of the ring gear was larger than what the magnet was designed to hoist. Among other methods, and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow American National Standards Institute, ASME B30.20-2006 Safety Standards for Below-the- Hook-Lifting Devices. No abatement certification or documentation is required for this item.
