Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: LIFTING
North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a struck-by falling objects hazard: a)production floor, the employer did not provide training to employees with regard to the proper application, operation, and maintenance of the Walker-Bux Circular Electric Lift, exposing the employees to a struck-by falling objects hazard. On August 6, 2007, an employee was injured when the electric lift magnet suddenly released a solid steel bar weighing approximately 1245 lbs. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to provide training to employees with regard to the proper application, operation, and maintenance of the close proximity electric lift magnet to ensure that the below-the-hoof lifting device is operated "only by trained, appointed personnel," which is in accordance with Section 20-3.4.2. of ANSI/ASME B30.20-1985, Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices.
