Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fire/explosion hazards: (a) On or about November 29, 2007 in the remelt furnace department: the employer did not ensure that the aluminum rims and the hopper were dry and void of any water, moisture, or liquid-bearing material when dumping the material into the furnace. Water introduced into furnace would be expected to cause a steam explosion releasing intense heat and metal projectiles which when coming into contact with an employee could be fatal. If not fatal, burns and trauma to the body and head, fractures, broken bones could be the result of such an accident. Among other methods of abatement, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: Follow the American National Standards Institute 7.241.2-1999, Safety Requirements for Melting and pouring of Metals in the metal Casting industry. This would include establishing adequate procedures for furnace charging and additions to molten metal that would address using only dry charge materials and avoiding closed or partially closed containers that may contain liquids to be mixed with the furnace charge.
