Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees exposed to being struck by a tow tractor and/or the semi-trailers being pulled by the tow tractor: On and before April 14, 2007, employees were not properly operating tow tractors and connecting / securing the semi trailers to the tow tractors exposing employees to being struck by the semi-trailers or tow tractors. Employees operated tow tractors such as but not limited to the Capacity 1977 Trailer Jockey (tow tractor), Mdl #107271, SN. 203253350 and the Ottawa 1995 "Commando", SN. YT30, VIN# 11VAA12E3TA000014, to move semi-trailers around the company's property. One feasible and acceptable method, among others, to correct this hazard is to train operators and require them to operate the tow tractors in accordance with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard B56.9-2006, "Safety Standard For Operator Controlled Industrial Tow Tractors,"as applicable.
