Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards: On or about February 02, 2007, an employee, off-loading bundles of lumber from a flatbed trailer at the delivery destination, was exposed to crushing hazards. The load had shifted during transport. All tie-down straps, used to secure the load, had been removed and the load had not been blocked to prevent lateral movement. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT TO CORRECT THE HAZARD IS: a)Secure bundles of dressed lumber to prevent lateral movement In Accordance With the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, 49 CFR Part 393.118, Subpart I, Protection Against Shifting and Falling Cargo. b)Inspect load to insure it is stable and safe before removing all straps at destination. c)When the load is found to be unstable, use a forklift or other appropriate means, such as, trailer stakes installed in the trailer floor pockets to stabilize the load during off- loading process. d)Insure that all non-essential persons do not enter into off-loading areas. e)Insure employees do not stand with their back to a trailer with an unrestrained load. f)Train all drivers/employees on procedures for off-loading materials at their destinations. 29 CFR 1903.19(d)(1) requires certification and documentation that the abatement of the above violation is completed.
