Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crush & struck by hazards: a) Mittal Steel Mill, MultiServ Scrapyard Operations, Coatesville, PA - Employees (Brakemen) were exposed to death and serious injury when they were required to work in areas of the yard where there was little to no lighting. Employees were often working in the dark (while working at night) when they had to assemble and break down strings of railroad cars, and perform track switching operations. On or about 12/27/06. Abatement Note: One feasible and useful means of abatement, among other methods, would be for the company to install and maintain a lighting system based on the consensus document ANSI/IESNA RP-7-01 which recommends at least 5 footcandles for the sides of cars, and at least 2 footcandles at switch points.
