Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards from not following safe maintenance procedures while working on road scrapers: (a) 1316 Cambell Street, Rapid City, SD, on or about August 5, 2006, employees were exposed to crushing hazards from not following safe work practices when performing maintenance on an Allis Chalmers road scraper. Note: Among other methods, the following are feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct the hazards: 1. Place the vehicle in neutral, put the emergency brake on, and chock the wheels before turning on the ignition. 2. Have the maintenance operators, before turning on the ignition, position themselves in the driver's seat maintaining full control of the vehicle.
