Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards: 139 Washington Road: An employees was riding on top of a load in the cargo area of a pickup truck and was exposed to fall hazards. Two other employees were riding on the floor of the cargo area of a pickup truck. The company had a policy that stated: "All employees are required to ride in the cab and never in the truck bed" and the policy had not been enforced. The manufacturer of the vehicle stated in the operating manual: "It is extremely dangerous to ride in the cargo area, inside or outside of a vehicle. Do not allow people to ride in any area of your vehicle that is not equipped with seats and safety belts." Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to re-train employees and provide enforcement of the company policy of using seat belts and riding in the cab and never riding in the back of trucks.
