Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by a projectile and/or burns: a.Site - Employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by a projectile and/or being burned as a result of unintentional ignition of powder charge(s) while pulling double loads from in-line muzzleloaders. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement would be to follow the instructions provided in the Owner's Manual for the rifle, which indicates the following to deactivate the propellant in the barrel: Secure a pail of water (hot if possible) and submerge the breech section of the barrel into the water. Make certain that at least 8 inches of the breech is under water and allow the barrel to remain submerged for at least one-half hour.
