Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards: (a ) Location - Fabrication shop: On or about 10/3/05, employees were exposed to crushing hazards as overhead cranes and hoisting devices were not inspected on a frequent basis. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to train employees to inspect the crane each day prior to use. Among the items to inspect include: Excessive wear of chains, ropes and hoisting mechanisms, twisted or distorted links, cracked or broken parts, condition of sheave, all functional operating mechanisms.
