Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck and/or crushed by lift trucks: (a) High Bay area, On or about May 30, 2006 - An employee was operating the Crown Turret Stockpicker and traveling with an elevated load that restricted the operators view. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: (1) Ensure that company policy is followed, in that before Turret Truck operators travel with the lifts that they are required to lower the forks and load to the lowest possible point to allow a clear line of sight of the path in which they are traveling. The Safety Standard for Low Lift and High Lift Trucks, ANSI B56.1- 2000, Section 5.3.10, indicates that travel with load engaging means or load shall be low and to not elevate the load except when stacking.
