Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: On October 26, 2005 and at times prior the employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falling objects: (a)Yard #3, Bayou La Batre, AL, Grove RT58C crane s/n 47831: On October 26, 2005 and at times prior the employer exposed employees to the hazard of falling steel plate being lifted by an improperly designed and unlabeled under the hook lifting device (20 foot spreader bar) while fitting and tack welding plate in place on boats under construction. Among other methods one feasible method to correct this hazard is to follow the requirements of ANSI B30.20-1993 for Below the Hook Lifting Devices, Chapter 20-1 that states in Section 20-1.2- Markings and Construction the following: Paragraph 1 (a) Rated load Marking. The rated load of the lifting device shall be marked on the main structure where it is visible. Paragraph 1 (b) Identification. A nameplate or other permanent marking shall be affixed displaying the following information: (1) manufacturers name and address (2) serial number (3) lifter weight if over 100 lb. (4) rated load and in Section 20-1.2- Markings and Construction the following: Paragraph 2. General Construction. A lifter shall be designed to withstand the forces imposed by its rated load, with a minimum design factor of 3, based on yeild strength for load bearing structural components.
