Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
NCGS 95-129(01): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death of serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fire and/or explosion: a) facility -- Denatured alcohol was being used in the process of cutting laminated glass when two employees were seriously burned on January 07, 2005. Denatured alcohol was poured onto the glass and was lit. Either one of the employees was holding the container of denatured alcohol, or the container was in close proximity to the flame. The flame followed the vapors into the container and caused the bottom of the metal container to be blown off. "Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to use an electric heat gun instead of denatured alcohol to heat the laminated glass when cutting."
