Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazard: a.On or about April 13, 2005, employees working at the 5427 Fair Oak Lane site were exposed to crushing injuries due to a 24' X 46' elevated home falling during lifting operations because the home was not adequately supported while employees were under it.. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable means of abatement to correct the hazards, include but are limited to: 1)When using equipment to support a raised house, have employees follow established practices of structural movers, such as using I-beams to support the house, lifting devices (such as but not limited to, cranes, jacks), and 6" X 6" wood cribbing/blocking. 2)Ensure that cribbing used to support a raised house is capable of supporting the load imposed upon it. 3)Have a competent person evaluate and make recommendations for stabilizing the house prior to lifting. 4)Make mandatory job safety practices that no employee be under a house while it is being raised and/or lowered. Or in the alternative: 29 CFR 1926.305(d)(1)(i): After the load had been raised, it was not cribbed, blocked, or otherwise secured at once: a.On or about April 13, 2005, the employer did not adequately crib, block nor secure the house being lifted, exposing employees to a crushing injuries. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED.
