Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fall hazard: a) At the site, on or about 08/30/05, employees were using a scissor lift to access a metal roof. The employees were installing this roof. In order to access the roof, the employees positioned a scissor lift under the roof trusses. This positioning put the scissor lifts platform approximately 48 inches under the roof's deck. This scissor lift positioning required the employees to climb, from the roof, to the lift, by using the guardrails of the scissor lift as a ladder, thus creating a fall hazard. The manufacture prohibits standing or sitting on guardrails. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this fall hazard would be to provide the employees with a ladder to access the roof and ensure that the ladder and its use complied with 29 CFR 1926.1053.
