Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Labor and Employment Article, Section 5-104(a): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: (a)Date of Violation:03/08/04 Condition:Employee placing road work signs on the shoulder of a highway where the average speed was 70 - 75 mph were not protected from being struck by on coming vehicular traffic. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to develop and implement a means to protect employees setting signs such as the use of an attenuator attached to a truck following the vehicle carrying the signs to increase awareness to highway drivers, or to have police vehicles with lights on, prior to the area where the signs are being set to slow traffic and make the highway drivers more alert; and to train employees in the purpose, use and limitations of the method being used to decrease the likelihood of an employee being harmed by vehicular traffic. Abatement documentation (photographs, receipts, copies of programs, training certification, etc.) is required for this item.
