Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
P.L. 91-596 Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by a vehicle: A) Job site - Employees operated a 1992 Ford F250 pick-up truck that had a transmission gear selection indicator that improperly displayed the selected gear. This exposed employees to the hazard of being struck by the vehicle if the employee exited the vehicle while it was still running and not properly placed into "park". Employees in and around the vehicle could also be injured if the vehicle was not placed in the selected gear and the transmission slipped into another gear while the truck was idling. A feasible abatement method to correct this hazard would be to have employees ensure that the gear shift indicator is working properly during inspections of the vehicle and if a deficiency is noted, remove the vehicle from service until repairs are completed.
