Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LACKTRAIN
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of being struck by lightning: (a) Residential home at 16 Ball Creek Way, Atlanta, Georgia, On or about May 17, 2004 - Employees sought refuge under and in a single axle dump truck during a rain storm. Employees had not been made aware of the appropriate actions to take in case of inclement weather. Hazard of being struck by lightning. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is the implementation of safety programs which could include the following essentials: 1) Develop and implement an effective written lightning protection system. 2) Follow the Federal Emergency Management Agency; National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration; National Weather Channel; Lightning Protection Institute; and the local Weather Channel, "Lightning Safety Guidelines" as the thunderstorm approaches. 3) Provide training to managers and foreman on lightning safety guidelines. 4) Provide employees with training on lightning safety guidelines outlining the employee/employer rights and responsibilities. 5) Implement an effective enforcement procedure. 6) Remove employees from the site after recognizing incoming lightning and or thunderstorm.
