Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Title 40.1-51.1.(a), Code of Virginia: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: (a) While using gasoline as an accelerant to ignite a rubbish pile located at the rear of 5340 Lee Highway, New Baltimore, Virginia, the employer had employees exposed to fire hazards by allowing them to ignore the most basic requirement of the Material Safety Data Sheet for gasoline and use an open flame within the possible path of vapor travel which resulted in an explosion that severely burned three employees. One feasible and acceptable abatement method is to retrain the employees on the Physical Hazards/Precautionary Measures section of the Material Safety Data Sheet for gasoline to wit: Extremely flammable liquid and vapor. Vapor can cause flash fire. Keep away from heat, sparks, flames, static electricity or other sources of ignition.ty
