Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to burns: a.Unit #2 - Waste Heat Boiler (WHB) Platform: On or about 6/4/09, employees were exposed to being burned by hot water and condensate while draining water from the WHB Steam Drum through the blow down piping system located at the top of the unit #2 platform, while a sight level glass installation was taking place, due to the location of the blow down exhaust. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible method of abatement to reduce this hazard is to: 1.Follow the recommendation of the National Board Inspection Code 2007, Part 1 Installation, Section 2.7.5 (l) which states that "The discharge of blowoff pipes shall be located so as to prevent injury to personnel". Note: In addition to abatement certification, the employer is required to submit abatement documentation for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c) and (d), respectively.
