Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: ELECTRIC
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of electrical burns and or electrocution while operating equipment in close proximity to energized overhead electrical power lines: a)On or about 3/10/2002, in the orange grove belonging to Robert Abbott at the approximate location of Parnell Rd and Flint Dr in Zolfo Springs, Fl. The employee was operating equipment called a "Goat" within ten feet of overhead power lines. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD WOULD BE TO: 1.Ensure that employees are trained in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions associated with work around overhead electrical power lines. 2.Have the power company remove de-energize and ground the power lines prior to working near the overhead electrical power lines. 3.Ensure that machinery is not operated near overhead electrical power lines.
