Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of tire blow-out in that: a) On or about 09/05/02 the employer assigned an employee to drive a truck with defective and incompatible front steering tires. The front steering tires had been on the truck for approximately eight years. The tires were weathered, dry rotted and cracked. The tires were super single instead of dual. Because of singles being used as steering tires the employer had to use special mounting lugs. This incompatibility and dry rot condition of the front steering tires created a hazard of the possible blow out. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to use steering tires that are designed for the truck and road conditions and that are free from defects such as dry rotting and cracking.s
