Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck by hazards in that a notch and backcut were not made properly in felling trees. (a)Ard's Tree Service - The employer on May 28, 2003 did not make the proper notch and backcut in felling trees. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard includes but not limited to: 1.Notches shall be 45 degrees or greater and large enough to guide the fall of trees and trunks to prevent splitting. 2.Notch depth should not exceed one-third of the diameter of the tree. 3.Notches and back cuts shall be made at a height above the highest ground level to enable chain saw operators to safely begin the cut, control the tree or trunk and have freedom of movement for escape.
