Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being run over or into by vehicles that were left unattended: (a)440 South 375 West, Shoshone, Idaho: On or about September 26, 2001 and at times prior thereto the International Harvester service truck, VIN #AA172JHA25192, was left unattended on an incline with the engine running and the wheels not blocked or chocked. (b)440 South 375 West, Shoshone, Idaho: On or about September 26, 2001 and at times prior thereto vehicles needing service were parked directly behind the unattended International Harvester service truck while the engine was running and the wheels were not blocked or chocked. Employees were allowed to enter the area between the two vehicles where they could be crushed if the truck rolled. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to always chock the wheels of trucks when they are parked and never enter the danger zone between the truck and other equipment. Note: Abatement certification required for this item.
