Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed while loading/unloading refuse from a trash truck: (a) Location - 49 Stony Brook Rd., Westford, MA: On or about 08/28/02, employees were exposed to crushing injuries during the loading/removal of refuse from the trash truck while the compactor equipment was in use. Among other feasible methods of abatement, one acceptable method to correct the hazard is: 1. Develop and implement a written policy for the operation of Leach and other refuse trucks, while loading or removing refuse from the truck. 2. Train employees on the safe operating procedures for the compaction equipment used on the trash trucks, as recommended by the manufacturer. 3. Ensure, on a daily basis, that all compaction equipment is operating according to manufacturer's recommendations.
