Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing injuries: Welding Shop, SSV Area - Welders are exposed to crushing injuries from wall mounted and floor mounted jib cranes fabricated in house. Approximately 27 cranes were modified and put into service and no inspection program was developed as required by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers ASME B30.11-1998, section 11-2.1. On or about February 02, 2001, a wall mounted jib crane fell from its supporting structure and struck an employee. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to develop an inspection program which meets the requirements of ASME B30.11-1998, section 11-2.1.
