Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck or crushed by the derrick mast of drilling rig #15. a) Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to ensure that the derrick mast and its auxiliary parts are substantially constructed to conform to good engineering practice and maintained in a safe condition as in accordance with Section 8.2.1 of the 1992 American Petroleum Institute (API) Recommended Practice 54, Recommended Practices for Occupational Safety for Oil and Gas Well Drilling and Servicing Operations.
