Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falls from a tower: a) At the worksite, an employee was being hoisted by a load line on his way to the top of a 480 foot tower to install new equipment and the load line failed due to a knot being tied in it causing the employee to fall. Employer failed to verify that the knot in the load line as a part of the hoist system could safely be used to lift the employee to the top of the tower. As a result, an employee was exposed to a fall hazard, on or about September 17, 1999. One feasible and acceptable abatement method among others is to follow the guidelines of "OSHA Directive CPL 2-1.29 Interim Inspection Procedures During Communication Tower Construction Activities."
