Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed by collapsing wood decks due to inadequate vertical supports and bracing used in their construction.Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install adequate vertical supports and lateral bracing to fully support the wood decks. (a) On 05/30/01 an employee preparing to install leg supports under a wood deck was crushed to death when the deck collapsed. The vertical supports and lateral bracing for the 10x12 deck were inadequate.
