Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: CHEMICAL
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of inhalation, ingestion, chemical/thermal burns, and catastrophic release of anhydrous ammonia. a)On or about July 19, 2000, an employee was exposed to liquid ammonia while opening a valve on the high pressure liquid ammonia pipe line leading to the marinate mixer. A half-inch diameter pressure liquid ammonia pipe which descended from the main manifold on the ceiling to the marinate chill tank did not have pipe supports in place to support the weight of the pipe and its contents, thereby exposing employees to contact with anhydrous ammonia liquid and/or vapors. Among others, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to comply with The American National Standard Institute/International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration 2, 1992 Edition, Paragraph 5.3.1, Piping Hangers and Supports, which states: "The supports shall carry the weight of the pipe, including contents and insulation".... and Table 2, Recommended Maximum Spacing of Hangers and Minimum Hanger Rod Size for Steel Pipe, which states that the maximum spacing between hangers be 7 ft for a nominal pipe of up to 1 inch diameter.
