Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CHEMICAL
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the conditions listed below: Chevron USA, Inc., 6501 Trowbridge, El Paso, TX. For the period of time up to and including August 7, 2001, one Chevron employee and three contract employees were sprayed with sulfuric acid (98.5) which was under pressure. The nearest emergency eyewash/shower unit was approximately 78 feet from the point of hazardous chemical release; however, the pathway was obstructed with piping and other permanently installed equipment. A second emergency eyewash/shower unit, with a less obstructed pathway, was located in another unit approximately 93 feet from the incident. This exposed employees to hazards and injuries associated with chemical burns and not having quick drenching facilities immediately accessible. Feasible and acceptable methods to correct the hazardous condition may include: Installation of additional plumbed emergency eyewash/shower units or provide portable units.le
