Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: In the Maintenance Department, TNT 550 Air Jack was being improperly used to lift a tractor trailer. The right saddle of the right side of the lifting device of the jack was placed under the ICC bumper of the trailer. While being lifted, the saddle of the jack's lifting device slipped from under the ICC bumper striking two employees on or about October 29, 1996. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is: By following the manufacturer's owner manual in the proper and safe way of using the TNT 550 air jack. Always make sure both lifting saddles are cradled under the bumper frame or bed of the vehicle prior to lifting the vehicle. Other methods and limitations are included in ANSI B30.1, Section 1-3-1, 1986 operation requirements, and ANSI B30.1, Section 1-3-2, 1986 operational procedures.
