Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing injuries. a) On or about April 4, 1997, during the loading of a Case 580K Loader/Backhoe, an employee was fatally injured after the bucket portion was inadvertently lowered on to the employee. Abatement Notes: An abatement method to address this hazard would be to read and follow the manufacturers (Case Corporation) written operators manual #9-15981. Specifically, as found on page 12, "Be alert and always know the location of all workers in your area. Keep all other persons completely away from you machine."
