Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: Each employer shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees: On December 17, 1998, an employee suffered fatal crushing injuries to the chest while working on the drydock wingwall. The exact cause of the incident is unknown as there were no witnesses. The most likely occurrence is that the employee was pinned between a leg of the moving crane and some object on the wingwall. One possible solution to the crushing hazard is to limit access to and activity on the drydock wingwall by instituting a traffic control system and installing visual as well as audible warning signals that indicate the movement of the crane.nt
