Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: CHEMICAL
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: a. On or about June 4, 1996, the waste water treatment operator injected compressed air , at 85- 90 p.s.i., from an air hose located near the nickel plating line into the 1000 gallon polypropylene acid batch treatment tank resulting in the tank rupturing and exposing him to a hot alkaline solution. Several feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard are to prohibit the injection of compressed air (at 85-90 p.s.i.) from air hoses into the tank, use of a low pressure blower or a propeller type motor to agitate the waste water mixture, installation of an automatic pH system to the monitor process and install a pressure reducing device at the line entering the tank.
