Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) Steel beam storage yard, hazard of employees being crushed by and/or caught between steel beams due to the failure by compression or bending of the wood cribbing used for beam support. The employer did not provide an adequate program to determine the load capacities of the wood block cribbing used to support steel beams. (b) Employees were not trained in the load capacities of wood block cribbing, and were not trained in the proper location for placement of wood cribbing in the stack of steel beams. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods to correct the hazard include: (a) Establish a program and procedures to evaluate and determine the load capacities of the wood cribbing used to support the steel beams by using accepted good engineering practices. (b) Establish a training program to train employees in the load capacities of the wood cribbing. (c) Establish a training program to train employees in the proper placement of wood cribbing in the stack of steel beams when used to support the load. (d) Use cribbing material that is not susceptible to failure by compression or bending.ion
