Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a. The hazard of fire and explosion a the Gold Kist, Inc., worksite where the employer permitted the use of natural gas in its plant without the addition of a recognizable ordorant on or about May 2, 1992. Among others, one feasible and acceptable method to correct the hazard is to secure the hand valve which controls the ordorant system to prevent its being turned off and to monitor the system operation. Additionally, contractors must be informed of the need to purge natural gas lines to the outside of the building.
