Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falling from a tree when not protected by fall protection at all times. A worker involved in the removal of a tree, fell an estimated 60 ft. when the safety belt he was wearing was not secured to anything. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to insure that when workers are working in trees, they are tied off at all times. One method to insure this is accomplished is through the use of a double lanyard system which protects workers during the tying and untying periods. A) CORNER OF MELLEN AND PLAIN ST.: A WORKER INVOLVED IN THE REMOVAL OF A TREE WAS NOT PROTECTED FROM A FALL AT ALL TIMES WHILE IN THE TREE THROUGH THE USE OF A SAFETY BELT AND LINE. THE WORKER HAD A SAFETY BELT ON BUT IT WAS NOT CONNECTED TO ANYTHING. ONE METHOD TO INSURE THAT THERE IS NO EXPOSURE TO A FALL IS TO UTILIZE A DOUBLE LANYARD SYSTEM WHEN MOVING FROM ONE AREA TO ANOTHER. THIS SYSTEM ALLOWS THE WORKER TO BE TIED OFF AT ALL TIMES.
