Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): One or more methods of machine guarding was not provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. On or about September 21, 2017, and at times prior thereto, the laser system for preventing movement of the conveyor that transports large bundles of stacked bricks was designed such that it could actuate conveyor movement while employees were in the danger zone. This condition exposed employees to the hazards of being caught between the stack and the roller deck when removing broken loose bricks. Abatement Note: Presence-sensing Device Initiation systems must not be used to initiate machine functions when workers can cross the laser beam into a danger area thus initiating an operating cycle.
