Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Severe burns, scalding and death cause by hot water, steam and hot liquor. On the 5 1/2 floor of Building 53 employees were directed and/or permitted to work on or be near leaking pressurized Effect Evaporized Heater Vessel before depressurizing and locking out the vessel. Abatement of the hazard can be accomplished by the establishment of: 1) Management controls over the work performed. 2) Instruction of employees in the recognition of hazards and documentation of the work performed. 3) Depressurizing and locking out leaking pressurized vessels before working on or being in near proximity to them. 4) Secure an Operator-Maintenance Manual from the manufacturer for assistance in direction for establishing management controlsand instruction of employees in safe working and maintenance practice. 5) Posting of warning notice to employees at a leaking evaporator vessel to warn employees to remain free of the area.
