Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) the hazard of falling from elevation due to vertical gate electrical interlocking devices failed to function on a Alimak rack and pinion elevator, model no. 18/30, #3122, 1981. Elevator had not received a daily safety check, such as, but not limited to 1) check gates, rollers and gate cable, 2) apply power, check push buttons for control, check emergency stop, and check mechanical and electrical interlocks, 3) monitor automatic stopping position of unit at both bottom and top landing to insure proper functioning of upper and lower limits. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard is to maintain written, dated and signed inspection reports and records of daily examination of elevators in accordance with ANSI A 17.2, 1973, Part I Routine Inspection and/or comply with manufacturing recommendation.
