Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: On the telecommunications tower under construction at 1446 Bald Mountain Road, employees climbed to heights of 240 feet to reach their working station. At this station, the employees wrapped their lanyard around the angle steel support braces of the tower, attaching the lanyard back to itself. This practice exposed the employees to the hazard of falling from the tower should the angle steel cut the webbing. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to implement the use of wire hooks designed to encircle iron and steel structural members along with a self-closing, self-locking carabiner or a cross-arm strap equipped with a forged D-ring designed to wrap around beams or other structural components.
