Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: Employees were exposed to crushing hazards in the shop area of this establishment. Signs were routinely removed from transport trailers with a crane, set onto a dolly, and rolled into the shop where they were later welded to the frame of the dolly to prevent the sign from falling over. This work practice could result in serious injury or death in the event an employee is struck by a falling sign. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THE HAZARD IS: Evaluate all dollies to determine the maximum size and weight that each dolly can safely transport. The casters on all dollies should be fitted with a braking system. Secure the sign to the dolly prior to removing it from the stability of the crane attachment.
