Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Workers involved with performing maintenance on a 1984 Ford Bread Van, Reg # 158691 were exposed to injury while working under the vehicle, with a manual transmission, whose brakes were not set and whose wheels were not adequately chocked or other wise blocked to prevent movement of the vehicle. On or about September 13, 2000, a worker was injured when the vehicle he was working on from underneath moved after a coworker started the vehicle and his foot slipped off the clutch causing the vehicle to lurch forward. One feasible method of abatement would be to assure that the vehicle being worked on is secured against movement by blocking or chocking the wheels, placing the transmission in neutral position and setting brakes before allowing workers to get underneath the vehicle.th
