Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the explosion of molten metal from furnaces that were not adequately protected against such explosions. CASTING DEPARTMENT: Worker's were exposed to injury while operating a permanent mold casting furnaces in which the company had not adequately perform a hazard analysis of the casting process that fully identified, evaluated or controlled known hazards. On or about 2/23/99, a worker was injured on company furnace number 4, when molten metal came into contact with water, causing an explosion on the furnace he was casting. Amongst others, some feasible means of abatement for protecting the worker would include Increasing the Caster's Distance from the furnace or providing Protective Barriers such as screens when distance is not feasible.
